Cheyenne, Wyoming
There's something surreal about listening to Miles Davis on the Internet (Radio Paradise, check it out) while gliding along I80 in Nebraska at sunset with the cruise control locked onto a legal 75. Towing the world's fastest Nantucket Skiff!
This country is huge, boys and girls. Everyone should drive coast to coast at least once to appreciate the enormity of it. But since the last time I did it, seventeen years ago, I've noticed a creeping homogenization throughout the land. A good thing in some ways, I suppose. For instance, when I discovered that my ear holes are too small to accommodate earbuds (the buds pop out) there was a Target a spit away for a set of cheap but effective headphones. Still, I miss the regional differences of old. Sure, I've seen a few cowboy hats on old guys like me here in Cheyenne but the kids at Domino's could be from Natick. Same fashion sense and body piercings, no detectable accents. The world is definitely shrinking, at least culturally.
Some advice for would-be transcontinental travelers: leave the maps at home but bring your smart phone. I haven't consulted the former (because I didn't bring any) but my GPS saved me when a miscue deposited me in the bowels of Chicago a couple of days ago. I happen to have an iPhone but a Google Android or a Blackberry would be equally useful. And fun!
More photos from yesterday (click on the picture on the main page). Nothing great, but photo ops will become more abundant as I head west. Should have made Salt Lake City last night so I don't know exactly how far I'll get today. We shall see.
